Ichter Davis to Expand Family Law Services

Ichter Davis LLC is proud to announce the addition of JoAnna J Smith as the firm’s newest attorney.  JoAnna’s unique journey, which began with her work as a doula (a birth support person), has shaped her passionate commitment to providing crucial support to families during life-changing times. She now brings this dedication to assisting Georgians with a variety of family law issues, including divorce, custody, child support, mediation, protective orders, and name changes.

Before coming to Ichter Davis, JoAnna founded and ran the innovative Georgia Family Law Project where she oversaw more than 400 cases involving complex issues of custody, support, and division of marital estates.  She served as the Executive Director of Lawyers for Equal Justice, where she taught law practice management and helped more than a dozen attorneys start their own law firms.  She is a certified domestic relations mediator and arbitrator and an award-winning Guardian Ad Litem.

JoAnna’s background has influenced her particular focus on working with the LGBTQ++ community, individuals exploring alternative family structures, and parents of children with disabilities.  “As a special needs mom,” JoAnna says, “I get how hard just day-to-day life can be for parents.  It’s even harder during a big transition like a divorce or custody case.  I try to ease the process as much as possible.”

JoAnna will be working hand-in hand with Ichter Davis’s experienced commercial litigators on divorces involving valuing and dividing businesses and other complex assets.  Says partner Cary Ichter, “These kinds of matters require sophisticated financial knowledge and access to experts in tax matters, forensic accounting, fraud examinations, valuations, and complicated compensation packages.  As experienced business litigators, we are uniquely able to handle these areas of family law cases.”

Academically distinguished, JoAnna graduated summa cum laude from American University with a degree in Law & Society and a certificate in Women, Politics & Political Leadership. She is also a Truman Scholar and a Truman-Albright Fellow. JoAnna furthered her education at Emory University Law School as a Woodruff Fellow, earning both a law degree and a Master of Public Health.
